Northern Pacific extratropical cyclone variability and its linkage with Arctic sea ice changes

چکیده
Abstract Extratropical cyclones are critical weather systems affecting climate change in mid and high-latitude regions. Researching the characteristics, patterns, movements of extratropical is helpful for improved prediction understanding global change. Currently, there still great difficulties predicting cyclones. Also, few prior studies have investigated potential impact Arctic sea ice on cyclone activity (ECA). This study utilizes updated ERA5 data an ECA identification method to reveal Pacific. The results demonstrate that Pacific primarily occurs during cold season (November March), North region has maximum ECA. More remarkably, a strong linkage exists between preceding summer-fall anomalous changes We discover could modify local pressure field, changing southern boundary sector polar vortex winter, which turn influences intensity westerly jet stream eventually impacts season. Our exploration will provide references further Ocean.

Contribution of sea-ice loss to Arctic amplification is regulated by Pacific Ocean decadal variability
The pace of Arctic warming is about double that at lower latitudes—a robust phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. Many diverse climate processes and feedbacks cause Arctic amplification, includingpositive feedbacks associated with diminished sea ice. However, the precise contribution of sea-ice loss to Arctic amplification remains uncertain. Through analyses of both observations andmodel si...
متن کاملExtratropical Air-Sea Interaction, Sea Surface Temperature Variability, and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation
We examine processes that influence North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies including surface heat fluxes, upper ocean mixing, thermocline variability, ocean currents, and tropical-extratropical interactions via the atmosphere and ocean. The ocean integrates rapidly varying atmospheric heat flux and wind forcing, and thus a stochastic model of the climate system, where white noise...
متن کاملArctic cyclone water vapor isotopes support past sea ice retreat recorded in Greenland ice
Rapid Arctic warming is associated with important water cycle changes: sea ice loss, increasing atmospheric humidity, permafrost thaw, and water-induced ecosystem changes. Understanding these complex modern processes is critical to interpreting past hydrologic changes preserved in paleoclimate records and predicting future Arctic changes. Cyclones are a prevalent Arctic feature and water vapor ...
متن کاملImportance of autumn Arctic sea ice to northern winter snowfall.
In their contribution to PNAS, Liu et al. (1) suggested that the recent decline of Arctic sea ice has played a critical role in recent cold and snowy winters in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). This study is very interesting, but we believe it deserves several clarifications. First, in 2010, Wu et al. (2) discovered the importance of autumn Arctic sea ice in triggering regional cold extremes; for ...
